Poor Elizabeth Berkely thought her career lowpoint was Show Girls. Not anymore. Maybe it’s wholly sweet and sour, but being portrayed in a Lifetime, made for TV movie, suggests you’ve hit a new low.
Dustin Diamond, aka Samuel “Screech” Powers, stirred the pot of controversy back in 2009, when he released his tell-all book, Behind The Bell. It is puportedly full of half-truths and lies, but it was intriguing enough to raise a few eyebrows, and provoke questions about the long-running series. Why would Diamond lie about it? Oh, right… he’s really odd. That stated, so was Jose Canseco, and he was really on to something with the whole “drug use in baseball” thing.
Alas, let us progress.
This TV movie, The Unauthroized Saved By The Bell Story, will premier September 1, 2014, on Lifetime. As bad as it’ll be, it’s already gaining a Sharknado, cult-like following. You know you’re going to watch it if you were a fan of Saved By The Bell. You have to. You can’t have seen all the episodes, and not have seen this. It’s probably worth hosting a viewing party!
When word was first released that this–using this term loosely–“film” was going to be produced, most thought it was an actual documentary. Nope. There are actors in place to play the actors who brought us some of the most iconic characters in television history. And none of them bear much resemblance to their archetype.
It would be pretty awesome if the original stars would actually use this as an excuse to have a reunion. They could host a big viewing party, and steal a little thunder from the sensationalized version of their teenage lives.
