Best known as the star of the children’s show, That’s So Raven, Raven-Symone has been virtually out of the spotlight since her teenage stardom.
However, a year ago she surprised everyone with a tweet which appeared to be her coming out to the world that stated, “I can finally get married! Yay Government! So proud of you.”
The tweet was in response to the Supreme Court overturning the Defense of Marriage Act, giving more rights to homosexual couples. After that, Raven has remained quiet about her sexuality, until a recent interview with Oprah Winfrey for her show, Oprah: Where Are They Now, in which she said “But I will say that I’m in…an amazing, happy relationship with my partner, a woman.”
While not willing to give herself the label of “gay” or “lesbian”, she also rejects the label of African-American, “I want to be labelled a human who loves humans. I’m an American, I’m not an African-American”, she stated.
It’s a bold statement which Oprah believes is going to anger many people, but Raven defended her reasoning by admitting, “I don’t know what country in Africa I’m from, but I do know that my roots are in Louisiana. I’m American and that’s a colorless person.”
It’s a whole lot of revealing statements that are sure to stir up many comments and questions for one of the few teenage stars who was able to stay out of trouble and spotlight unlike Lindsay Lohan and Amanda Bynes. An issue that she also commented on in the interview stating she credits her parents with helping her stay out of scandals, “My parents taught me to keep my private life private to the best of my ability.”
Well Oprah seems to think her comments are going to cause some controversy but it seems Raven is just trying to promote love and happiness for everyone no matter how they identify, or in her case not at all.
