Journalist and author Joan Lunden has found out some unfortunate news: she has breast cancer.
The 63 year-old revealed the news to host and breast cancer survivor Robin Roberts on ABC’s Good Morning America. “I heard those words that every woman fears and never wants to hear: you have breast cancer.”
“In the beginning it’s such a shock, it’s a stunner,” she continued. “For me, I’m a health advocate, I’m all over America talking to women saying, ‘Make sure you get all of your checkups.’ In the beginning you almost feel like ‘What did I do wrong?'” Take a look at the video for more of the personal interview.
Joan, who co-hosted GMA from 1980 to 1997, first kept the news private, but then decided to go public with the interview and a post on her website, JoanLunden.com.
“I have decided to talk about my breast cancer because since the moment I took the job at Good Morning America I have lived my life sharing my joys and my disappointments with all of you: my pregnancies, my relationships, my career,” she wrote.
“I have shared my journey. So it certainly didn’t feel right keeping this part of my journey a secret.”
Joan, who says she is in “warrior mode” and is learning everything she can about the disease, has an aggressive form of cancer and is currently undergoing chemotherapy.
