Grey’s Anatomy shocked fans last month when it was reported that Justin Chambers was leaving the long-running ABC medical drama series after 16 seasons. Although the final episode featuring new footage of Chambers aired in November, the series has now set a farewell episode for his iconic character.
His Grey’s Anatomy farewell episode will air next Thursday, March 5th, and will serve as an official goodbye to his iconic character Dr. Alex Karev. The episode is titled “Leave A Light On,” will “feature a farewell to Alex Karev, providing closure to his character’s exit,” per a statement from ABC.

Earlier this year, Chambers’ sudden exit from the beloved series shocked many fans.
“There’s no good time to say goodbye to a show and character that’s defined so much of my life for the past 15 years,” Chambers said at the time. “For some time now, however, I have hoped to diversify my acting roles and career choices. And, as I turn 50 and am blessed with my remarkable, supportive wife and five wonderful children, now is that time. As I move on from Grey’s Anatomy, I want to thank the ABC family, Shonda Rhimes, original cast members Ellen Pompeo, Chandra Wilson and James Pickens, and the rest of the amazing cast and crew, both past and present, and, of course, the fans for an extraordinary ride.”
Due to Chambers’ last episode airing in November, the farewell episode is said to feature a lot of footage of Karev over the past 16 seasons, as well as an explanation to where he really has been. In the most recent Grey’s Anatomy episodes, his onscreen wife Jo hasn’t been able to get ahold of him and doesn’t know where he left to. The last time Chambers was seen on the show was when he helped saved Meredith’s career.
Although he was said to be in Iowa since his sudden exit, on the Thursday, February 27 episode fans learned he was never in Iowa at all.
Grey’s Anatomy airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. on ABC.
