The ever popular The Princess Diaries series first hit the big screen an astounding sixteen years ago! Even after all this time, the franchise continues to be a cult Disney favorite and hopes of a third film has been voiced persistently by fans.

Back in 2016 Garry Marshall, the film’s director, revealed he was planning the third installment of the series with Anne Hathaway. He has since passed away in July of 2016 but there has been interest in the series going forward “as a tribute” to Marshall.

Meg Cabot is the force behind the film’s plot line and first released the story in a best-selling young adult series. She recently spoke with E! News about the third film and was tight-lipped but hopeful. “Who knows?” she explained. “[It] could happen, as we say.”

When asked about potential plot lines, Meg continued, “I am not allowed to say. I would love to sit and talk about [it], but I can’t. I’m not allowed. But it’s really more following the movie than the books, so if she—the last version I read, she definitely did not find out that she has a biracial younger sister … which I personally would’ve thought was hilarious, but that was not the direction they were going.”

Julie Andrews, who starred in the films as Queen Clarisse Renaldi, also admit to the proceedings of a third installment to BuzzFeed News. “There’s talk about it. And [Anne’s] very keen to do it. I would very willingly and happily do it. I think we might do it in honor of [Garry]. Annie had an idea that she wanted to pursue about it, and I’m all for it, so if she’d like to…”
