Christina Aguilera has always been a busy woman, but she is refocusing her time on her music as she revealed in a new interview with Billboard, that The Voice was an “energy sucker.”
Aguilera, who released her first lead single in six years on Thursday, May 3 with “Accelerate” opened up about how she really felt about her time as a coach on NBC’s The Voice during seasons 1, 2, 3, 5,8 and 10, and she is certainly not raving about the series.
In the piece for the publication written by Allie Jones, Jones shared that when she asked Aguilera about ever returning to The Voice, Aguilera “scrunches up her porcelain face and says she would prefer to discuss ‘positive things.'” The singer went on to explain, . “It became something that I didn’t feel was what I had signed up for in season one. You realize it’s not about music. It’s about making good TV moments and massaging a story. She added, “I didn’t get into this business to be a television show host and to be given all these [rules]. Especially as a female: You can’t wear this, can’t say that. I would find myself on that show desperately trying to express myself through clothing or makeup or hair. It was my only kind of outlet.”
Aguilera also described working on the show as being in a “churning hamster wheel” saying, “I was longing for freedom,” and she revealed once she left the set, I would just take everything off—the makeup, all of it—and would blast hip-hop, or Nirvana, ‘Creep,’ Slayer. Anything like that to get me out of that zone, that TV mode.”
Now, with The Voice behind her forever, Aguilera is focusing on promoting her newest album which includes touring for the first time in a decade and for the first time as a mother. “Touring is so frightening to me, because I am a mom first,” she admitted. “It’s part of why I stayed in the position I was [at The Voice]. It’s easy to get comfortable and cushy in the same place and not have to worry about uprooting your kids. I’ve been putting myself on the back burner.” But now, she says, “it needs to happen. I’m looking forward to getting back out and actually showing my kids what Mommy really does!”
