49. Hit: Kate Middleton — 2018

Kate Middleton rarely attends celebrity red carpet events, but the one that we can typically expect her at is the BAFTAs. Each year she dresses to perfection and 2018 was no exception. We absolutely love this emerald, off-the-shoulder gown with a black sash she wore and how she accessorized with coordinating emerald jewelry.

48. Miss: Rachel Weisz — 2019

We have to admit we didn’t love the dress worn by Rachel Weisz at the 2019 BAFTA Awards. A common fashion faux at the 2019 BAFTAs was large ruffles that overpowered the dress, and this was, unfortunately, the case with this look worn by Weisz. All the tiers and frilly ruffles made this look feel more like a costume than a red carpet look.

47. Hit: Jessica Chastain — 2012

Jessica Chastain absolutely dazzled at the 2012 BAFTAs where she stepped out wearing this floor-length metallic gown. The combination of the silver color with pleats made for a seriously sparkling red carpet moment. We also love the criss-cross detailing along the bodice.

46. Miss: Viola Davis — 2019

As much as we love Viola Davis as an actress, we have to admit we were a little disappointed with her ensemble for the 2019 BAFTAs. The black dress was undeniably sleek, but the oversized white bow detail along the chest seemed to detract from the dress.

45. Hit: Carey Mulligan — 2010

Carey Mulligan wore a dramatic navy gown for the 2010 BAFTA Awards that featured a slight off-the-shoulder neckline and an eye-catching floral print. What really made this look unique and memorable is the layering of a shorter skirt peeking from beneath a full-length sweeping skirt.

44. Miss: Lily Collins — 2019

Lily Collins had a fashion miss at the 2019 BAFTA Awards where she stepped out wearing a deep blue dress paired with a matching jacket. We were quite disappointed with this look since the jacket hid all the details of the dress. We would have much preferred if this look skipped on the jacket to allow the details of the skirt to shine.

43. Hit: Freida Pinto — 2009

Freida Pinto stole the show at the 2009 BAFTA Awards where she donned a dreamy pink ruffled gown by Oscar De La Renta. We love that this number was delicate but also highly detailed with all the layering, pleats and tiers of the skirt.

42. Miss: Rachel Brosnahan — 2019

Rachel Brosnahan almost had a winning red carpet look for the 2019 BAFTA Awards, except for one detail that detracted from her look – the oversized bow on the front! It felt unnecessary and took away from the stunning emerald satin dress, which is why we were quite let down by this look.

41. Hit: Nicole Kidman — 2003

Nicole Kidman’s tall, statuesque figure can pull off nearly anything! We especially love her 2003 BAFTA look which was a body-skimming slip dress in a sleek off-white color. The dress fit her like a glove and channeled all the old Hollywood vibes.

40. Miss: Margot Robbie — 2019

We had high expectations for Margot Robbie’s look at the 2019 BAFTAs, but we have to admit we weren’t the biggest fans. The ruffles on this dress seemed to resemble wings and simply felt like too much, especially in combination with all the glitter of the bodice.

Emma Stone wore a totally unique Chanel look that we loved for the 2017 BAFTA Awards. The ensemble featured intricate silver beading throughout and was layered with matching pants which was unexpected and really made a statement.

38. Miss: Zawe Ashton — 2013

English actress Zawe Ashton stepped out at the 2013 BAFTA Awards wearing a dramatic black dress that no one could forget. Unfortunately, we’re not sure this was for the right reasons! The dress had strange embellishment, especially around the hemline, which really detracted from the overall look.

37. Hit: Marion Cotillard — 2013

No one could forget this sunny yellow look worn by Marion Cotillard on the 2013 BAFTA red carpet. The dress was a flattering column-style cut but featured a dramatic billowing detail on the hip that really brought the red carpet glamour.

36. Miss: Jennifer Lawrence — 2013

As much as we love Jennifer Lawrence, the 2013 BAFTAs wasn’t her finest fashion moment for one major reason: she left her coat on! Beneath her blazer was a beautiful Christian Dior Couture gown but she covered it up with a coat, which was a huge fashion faux pas and disappointment.

35. Hit: Michelle Williams — 2012

Michelle Williams looked as elegant as ever at the 2012 BAFTA Awards where she donned a strapless monochrome dress. The sleek ivory and black number featured a simple floral-accented waist, but she dazzled the look up with a silver choker and pop of red on her lips.

34. Miss: Romola Garai — 2010

There are certain celebrity events that call for a full-length gown, and we believe that the BAFTAs is definitely one of them. It seems that Ramola Garai missed the memo with the short cocktail dress she wore for the 2010 BAFTA Awards. We would have much preferred to see her in something a little more sophisticated and elegant for the formal occasion.

33. Hit: Kate Mara — 2018

Kate Mara stepped out at the 2018 BAFTAs in a black number that featured golden beading throughout. The strapless gown was definitely flattering and we love how the pattern shifts at the tiniest part of her waist to highlight her petite frame.

32. Miss: Eva Green — 2007

Back in 2007, Eva Green won the Rising Star award at the BAFTA Awards. While she got well-deserved praise for her talent, she certainly didn’t in the fashion department. The star opted for a red high neck dress with heavy embellishment on the sleeves and neck. She also rocked excessively dark eye makeup and a messy updo which, unfortunately, made matters worse.

31. Hit: Kate Middleton — 2011

One of Kate Middleton’s earliest appearances at the BAFTA Awards was in 2011 when she stepped out wearing this floor-sweeping lavender gown. The Alexander McQueen number complimented her sunkissed skin and glossy brunette tresses perfectly.

30. Miss: Kelly Reilly — 2006

Actress Kelly Reilly stepped out at the 2006 BAFTA Awards wearing a purple skirt and top combo that we, admittedly, weren’t the biggest fans of. The look simply seemed disjointed and didn’t properly flow with the harsh contrast of the black sultry bodice and the feminine, floral skirt.

29. Hit: Audrey Hepburn — 1955

Audrey Hepburn is one of the world’s most iconic style icons, so there’s absolutely no surprise that she has landed on this list! Her white tulle dress from 1955 featured a strapless bodice that showed off her tiny waist and petite figure and flourished into a voluminous skirt. To add her classic elegant style touch, Hepburn donned a pair of crisp white gloves as her accessory.

28. Miss: Helena Bonham Carter — 2018

Helena Bonham Carter’s silk ruched dress for the 2018 BAFTA Awards wasn’t entirely awful, but her hair and bag were definitely quite questionable. We love the draping and luxe silk texture of her dress, but her unruly updo made her outfit appear across messy and confusing. To make matters worse, her handbag stood out for all the wrong reasons and the embroidered “Queen” logo made everything appear a little juvenile and tacky.

27. Hit: Alicia Silverstone — 2004

Alicia Silverstone took the 2004 BAFTA red carpet in a sleek red number that definitely turned heads. The scarlet garment hugged her curves perfectly and the luxurious silk texture was highly flattering. We love that Silverstone opted to wear this look with an invisible-style shoe which made her legs appear extra long as they peeked out from the thigh-high slit.

26. Miss: Allison Janney — 2018

Allison Janney rocked quite a few hit red carpet looks during the 2018 awards show season, which is why we were all the more disappointed that her BAFTA look was definitely not one of them. The awkward silver detailing along the bodice was completely bizarre and made her look appear like something that belonged in a museum rather than the red carpet.

25. Hit: Penelope Cruz — 2007

Penelope Cruz is such a natural beauty that she would look jaw-dropping even in the most simple gown, but this particular embroidered number she wore to the BAFTAs in 2007 definitely stood out as one of the most memorable. Sometimes embroidery can come across distasteful and tacky on the red carpet, but Cruz’s number had the perfect touch of embroidery to be feminine and unique. We love the contrast of the dark navy with white and her gunmetal smokey eye paired flawlessly with the look.

24. Miss: Emily Blunt — 2017

Emily Blunt is quite unpredictable when it comes to her red carpet style and that was certainly the case with her 2017 BAFTA’s gown. The Alexander McQueen number was chaotic with all the heavy colorful embroidery paired with the black ruffled skirt. We would have much preferred to see Blunt wear something a little more whimsical and light.

23. Hit: Emily Blunt — 2008

Emily Blunt appeared at the 2008 BAFTA Awards in head to toe sparkle and we were absolutely floored! The mint color is one that doesn’t often make it to the red carpet, but we think the color is striking on Blunt and compliments her light eyes flawlessly. The one-shoulder number was ultra-sleek and the elegant updo she wore was definitely a nice touch to allow the shimmering details of the dress to steal the show.

22. Miss: Keira Knightley — 2015

Keira Knightley is an absolute beauty, but her look from the 2015 BAFTA Awards was definitely not one of her best. The petite actress rocked a gown made of head-to-toe feathers and also featured a subtle floral print and a color-block design. We can definitely support a good feathered dress but this one seemed awkward on the star because it hit her at a strange length at the ankle and seemed distracting by having so much happening at once.

21. Hit: Keira Knightley — 2008

Keira Knightley looked as classy as it gets when she stepped out at the BAFTA Awards in 2008! Her look featured a tiered, cupcake-style shape that was encrusted with glitter and beading throughout. Typically these tiered looks can come off a little unflattering, but this particular silver number was absolutely stunning on Knightley! The tiers were structured and slim which made the entire look come across quite sleek and delicate.

20. Miss: Amy Adams — 2017

Amy Adams is typically sophisticated and polished on the red carpet, but her look from the 2017 BAFTAs was definitely underwhelming. The emerald number was quite square-cut and didn’t flatter her figure or hug her curves. The back also featured strange mesh cutouts and a giant bow detail which didn’t flow and seemed awkwardly placed.

19. Hit: Kate Hudson — 2008

Full glitter gowns either have the potential to stun or fall flat, and Kate Hudson’s take on the trend in 2008 was definitely a huge win! She absolutely dazzled on the BAFTA red carpet and the chunky beading and metallic detailing definitely had all eyes on her. The golden Christian Dior sheath dress was the perfect complement to her starring role in Fool’s Gold at the time.

18. Miss: Michelle Williams — 2017

Typically stars opt for floor-length gowns at formal award shows, but Michelle Williams broke boundaries with her 2017 BAFTA look. Rather than the expected floor-skimming red carpet number, Williams stepped out in a mini dress with long sleeves. The garment featured silver sparkle detailing throughout and an embellished pattern on the bodice that featured a multi-color design. We’re not totally opposed to a strong cocktail dress on the red carpet, but unfortunately, this look wasn’t one of Williams’ best, especially in combination with the stark strappy heels.

17. Hit: Jessica Chastain — 2013

Jessica Chastain was an absolute vision at the 2013 BAFTA Awards when she stepped out in this chic Roland Mouret gown. The rich jewel tone of her dress was the perfect choice since it provided a nice contrast to her flame-red locks. One of the most interesting features of the gown was the asymmetrical, sharp neckline which added an air of sophistication and elegance.

16. Miss: Martine McCutcheon — 2004

Love Actually actress Martine McCutcheon stepped out at the 2004 BAFTA Awards rocking a full burgundy look that definitely turned a few heads. The shape of the gown didn’t seem to fit her body properly and should have been cut off at the smallest point of her waist rather than her hips. To make matters worse, the actress rocked a fur shawl around her neck which seemed a little more tacky than glamorous.

15. Hit: Lupita Nyong’o — 2014

Lupita Nyong’o absolutely wowed at the 2014 BAFTA Awards when she stepped out wearing this striking green number. The 2014 event consisted of a mainly black and metallic color scheme, so this Christian Dior number definitely provided the much-needed pop of color on the red carpet. The mermaid-style gown featured a sleek gold belt detail which she paired with matching cuffs for an ultra-polished look.

14. Miss: Edith Bowman — 2012

Edith Bowman stepped out wearing quite the awkward garment at the 2012 BAFTA Awards. Her look consisted of short trumpet sleeves and a flared skirt which hit her at an odd length above the ankle. We wish that the dress had more of a slim fit or cinched in at the waist to flatter her figure a little more. Aside from the shape, the silk gloves she wore pushed this even further into the most disappointing category.

13. Hit: Angelina Jolie — 2014

No one could possibly forget the 2014 BAFTAs when Angelina Jolie stepped out matching then-husband Brad Pitt! Jolie took on the masculine chic trend flawlessly and rocked a tuxedo look with the bowtie loose around her neck and buttons undone. The brunette beauty was the epitome of effortless sophistication and proved that it doesn’t always take a floor-skimming gown to turn heads on the red carpet.

12. Miss: Alesha Dixon — 2009

English singer Alesha Dixon stepped onto the 2009 BAFTA red carpet in a gown that definitely made quite a few jaws drop. We’re all for a textured dress on the red carpet, but this look was simply a ruffled mess. We would have much preferred to see a tighter bodice with delicate ruffle detailing along the skirt to show off her shape.

11. Hit: Kate Winslet — 2016

Kate Winslet was the picture of old Hollywood glam when she stepped out on the 2016 BAFTA red carpet. Her look was definitely minimal with the little black dress but also brought the wow factor with the asymmetrical neckline and sharp cutout detailing. For extra romance and flirtiness, Winslet topped the look with sparkling chandelier earrings, an embroidered red clutch, and a bright crimson pout.

10. Miss: Lily Allen — 2014

English singer Lily Allen stepped out in a bizarre look at the 2014 BAFTA Awards. We’re all for mixing unconventional colors and patterns, but the contrasting shades of orange and pink were too extreme. The bodice featured a strange V shape that made the garment come across tacky, especially in combination with the oversized orange bow on the back. To make matters worse, the star rocked a strange coral headpiece in her bow that didn’t seem to play off either of the colors on her gown.

Kate Middleton dazzled at the 2019 BAFTA Awards where she stepped out wearing this whimsical and floaty dress. The Duchess always nails her BAFTAs look each year and 2019 was no exception. We love the frilly shoulder detail of this dress which was the perfect example of glamour without going overboard.

8. Miss: Melinda Messenger — 2007

Melinda Messenger could have used some fashion coaching before her BAFTA debut in 2007. Although the crisp shade of white was flattering against Messenger’s sunkissed skin, the actual texture of the gown was an unfortunate fashion miss. The dress was crinkled and pleated in all the wrong places which looked quite messy and unpolished.

7. Hit: Dakota Johnson — 2016

The ever stunning Dakota Johnson wowed at the 2016 BAFTA Awards when she stepped out in this feminine yet striking red number. The slinky floor-length number featured dainty ruffles throughout and delicate spaghetti straps. The true wow factor of this dress is the bold color — the sultry shade works so well in contrast with all the soft, romantic detailing.

6. Miss: Holly Willoughby — 2012

Holly Willoughby stepped out at the 2012 BAFTAs wearing a dress that reminded us much more of prom look than one for an awards show. The bubblegum pink look was definitely sweet and feminine, but we would have preferred something a little more mature and sophisticated. The silver metallic belt and bedazzled bust simply felt overly juvenile.

5. Hit: Alicia Vikander — 2016

Alicia Vikander was drop-dead gorgeous at the 2016 BAFTA Awards in this sleek black number. The custom-made leather garment was designed by French fashion house Louis Vuitton and featured a contrasting leather and glitter paneling that definitely turned heads. Vikander is so naturally stunning that she can make anything work, but this sultry black number was undeniably one of her most memorable and unique looks!

4. Miss: Tess Dailey — 2013

Tess Dailey went extreme with her look at the 2013 BAFTAs! The black gown featured beading, sheer paneling, and ruffles which all together felt quite chaotic. We love the powerful effect of a strong black dress on the red carpet, but we definitely would have loved to see Dailey in something a little more minimal and simple. Luckily, the pop of red on her lips and beachy waves added a nice touch of red carpet glamour.

3. Hit: Julia Stiles — 2017

Julia Stiles was an absolute bombshell at the 2017 BAFTA Awards where she wore a long-sleeved lavender number designed by Maria Korovilas. We love that this gown featured a nice balance of soft and sultry by combining the deep V neckline with the dainty floral embroidery and sheer sleeves. Stiles let her hair fall in wispy pieces around her face and kept her makeup natural and glowy.

2. Miss: Naomie Harris — 2017

At the 2017 BAFTA Awards, Naomie Harris stepped out wearing a feminine, frilly dress that was quite disappointing. Harris is such a natural beauty that she still glowed, but we definitely wish she had opted for a gown a little more simple. The look featured a mauve bodice that was covered in ruffles and a pale yellow pleated skirt. We were fans of the soft color palette, but unfortunately, the chunky flowers at her waist definitely detracted from the elegance of this look.

1. Hit: Kate Middleton — 2017

Of all the stunning BAFTA fashion moments, Kate Middleton’s black off the shoulder number would have to be the most memorable! The garment featured a sleek shape and a subtle tiered skirt which added volume and glamour to her look. We love that the floral detailing increases in size as it trails the length of the skirt to really add the drama and red carpet glitz.
