Pretty Little Liars’ 7 Worst Couples

Source: www.wetpaint.com

Pretty Little Liars is all about uncovering the mystery of ‘A,’ but the show wasn’t built entirely on suspense and thrill. There were a couple love stories along the way. Fans definitely had their favorite power couples who combated evil together like Spencer and Toby or Hanna and Caleb, but some relationships were far from cute and in some instances kinda creepy. Here are the top 7 worst relationships on Pretty Little Liars:

7. Ashley Marin and Darren Wilden

Ashley and Darren met in the pilot episode of Pretty Little Liars when Hanna is arrested for shoplifting and Detective Wilden is assigned to the case. He soon takes an interest in Hanna’s newly single mother, Ashley. She uses his affection to her advantage and begins an intimate relationship with him to subdue the shoplifting charges against Hanna. Ick! But Ashley doesn’t realize that Detective Wilden has a secret agenda involving her daughter. He’s lurking around because he suspects Hanna is the one that killed Alison. He’s totally creepy and off-putting as he continues to show up unannounced at the house and is even found by Hanna one morning standing in the kitchen with just a towel around his waist. A grown man taunting a teenage girl for information and sleeping with her mom while doing it is weird. This whole relationship was totally gross and immediately cast Wilden as a villain on the show. Eventually Ashley catches on to Darren’s keen interest in Hanna and her friends and quickly pulls the plug on their relationship.

6. Emily Fields and Paige

Paige and Emily’s relationship began as very hostile. In fact, Paige tried to kill Emily out of competitive frustration and in confusion of her feelings for Emily (Paige had not openly come out as gay). She held Emily’s head underwater and tried to drown her! What’s more weird is that soon after the two make amends and eventually begin dating it’s never really brought up again…not exactly love at first sight. Fans knew the relationship was doomed from the start, but it was also their on and off again status that was really annoying as it continued on for several seasons. Paige became increasingly whiny and needy, starting one dramatic fight after another. First it was that she didn’t want to come out of the closet, then she was mad because Emily talked to someone about it, then Paige betrayed Emily and her friends by leaking information about ‘A’ to the cops and continued to battle with Emily about her situation with ‘A.’ For a while we weren’t sure whose side Paige was on because she seemed to have a vendetta against Alison for bullying her. Eventually Paige moved away and Emily was completely hung up on her. She even considered moving to California to be with her — we sure are glad that never happened!

ABC FAMILY

5. Spencer Hastings and Wren Kingston

Spencer and Wren were confusing from the beginning. The two participated in a mild flirtation in the pilot episode and it continued on from there. The relationship was never going to work because Wren was dating Melissa, Spencer’s older sister. Wren and Spencer would flirt and kiss behind Melissa’s back which was completely damning to both their characters. But the weird thing about it all was that Wren continued to show up sporadically throughout the following seasons, even after he was no longer with Melissa and his interest in Spencer continued. He genuinely had a crush on her. What doesn’t really make sense about any of it is that Wren was so much older and even an established doctor…so what was he doing with a teenage high school student like Spencer? Sure, she’s got the brains and beauty, but really? What self respecting man repeatedly crushes after a young teenage girl? Later on in the series he even makes the moves on to Hanna! We aren’t quite sure what this relationship was all about and how it ever carried on for as long as it did, but one thing we know for sure is that it was weird and unnecessary.

4. Ashley Marin and Jason DiLaurentis

Ashley Marin has the worst romantic track record out of all the characters in the PLL series. She’s not exactly the best judge in character when it comes to men. We didn’t think things could get worse after her stunt with Detective Wilden, but she surprised us all when her relationship credibility took an even bigger nose dive as she started fooling around with Jason. The two begin their hook-up when Jason offered Ashley a job at his company. Firstly, Jason is closer to her daughter’s age than her own and he has been romantically linked to Aria, one of her daughter’s best friends (and CeCe)! There’s a whole lot of things wrong in that sentence. To make this relationship even more taboo, Ashley Marin was dating the sweet and adorable Pastor Ted when she hooked up with Jason…more than once. We definitely liked Pastor Ted more than Jason, and once again Ashley made a bad decision with her love life.

3. Emily Fields and Sara Harvey

It’s pretty evident throughout the PLL series that Emily is a bit of a womanizer. She jumps from relationship to relationship and we rarely ever get to see her single, at least not for long. So we aren’t all that surprised when a new girl is introduced on the show and immediately Emily gets a new love interest. Sara was among the girls trapped in the underground prison, and after the girls were rescued, Sara just wouldn’t go away. She had a traumatizing and damaging past which stopped her from going home to her family, so she ended up living at Emily’s house, but we just wanted her to move out and move on! The relationship seemed to spark out of nowhere. Sara was virtually a stranger, she could have been ‘A’ for all we know! Yet, Emily and her mother were totally accepting of her living under their roof and Emily even teetered on the edge of falling in love with her. We weren’t all that surprised to find out in the finale of season 6 that Sara was working with ‘A.’ There was always something a little off with her…poor Emily was sleeping with the enemy the whole time! Definitely one of the more creepy relationships on PLL.

2. Mona Vanderwaal and Mike Montgomery

The relationship between Mike and Mona definitely took everyone by surprise. It was certainly odd to have Aria’s arch enemy shacking up with her little brother. Mona is so manipulative we can never quite tell what her intentions are; was the relationship ever real? We know it was for Mike but Mona constantly goes from evil to nice — she’s not exactly trustworthy. Mike has his fair share of problems as he’s emotionally unstable and seems to always be angry at either Aria, her parents…or the just the world. We aren’t sure the exact age difference between the couple, but we know Mike is younger and nowhere near Mona’s league. It seems odd that someone like Mona who is very calculated and driven and would go for a freshman boy like Mike and it wouldn’t have been unlike Mona to use Mike as a pawn to torment Aria. There’s also the small detail that Mike doesn’t seem to mind dating a girl who harassed and blackmailed his sister for the previous two years, oh and tried to kill Hanna by running her down in her car. Mike was dedicated to Mona even after she faked her own death — clearly Mike doesn’t know crazy when he sees it!

ABC FAMILY

1. Toby Cavanaugh and Jenna Marshall

This relationship is definitely the creepiest out of all the relationships in the PLL series and so it easily lands at number one on our list. When the show started out fans weren’t quite sure why these two siblings were so intimately close all the time. They aren’t blood related, they are step siblings, but it doesn’t make the idea of them hooking up any less horrifying. The story goes that Jenna would force herself on Toby which is never really explained, but she manages to keep Toby quiet about it by threatening him. She told him if he ever told anyone about it she would flip the story to make it look like he was pursuing her. This girl was totally crazy. Luckily, Toby ends up getting sent to juvenile school, which he actually doesn’t mind because he is able to get away from Jenna once and for all.
