8. Leaving General Hospital (Part One)

He worked on General Hospital for over 20 years, but left the show in 2012 and then joined the cast of The Young and the Restless that same year. According to him, he left GH for Y&R because of money. “What you and I both know – that ‘GH’ didn’t make a deal with me. And that’s the truth. My contract was up and they didn’t want to play ball and make it work. At the time, I didn’t want to throw anyone under the bus over there but of course, as soon as it was announced I was going to ‘Y&R,’ people thought the whole thing was planned by Jill on Day 1, which it was not,” he told TV Guide. General Hospital must have made a better deal with him because he left Y&R in 2017 to go back to GH.

7. Upbringing

The former General Hospital star was born in Indianapolis, Indiana but, after his parents divorced, he moved to Cleveland where he was raised in the suburb Richmond Heights before moving to Hollywood to live with his dad. He finished high school at Beverly Hills High School in Beverly Hills, California.

6. Breakout Role

The soap actor’s breakout role was in the American fantasy sitcom Out of This World as surfer boy, Chris Fuller. During the same time period, he also made a memorable guest appearance on the hit prime time show Who’s The Boss?

5. Marriage and Family

He has been married to Sheree Gustin since 1999. They have three children together, Makena (2004), Jack Burton (2006) and Brooklyn Faith (2014). In 2012, after he quit General Hospital, the daytime soap star moved his family from Los Angeles to the country outside Nashville, Tennessee.

4. Night Shift

In 2007, Burton appeared as Jason Morgan on the short-lived TV series General Hospital: Night Shift. Pitched to audiences as a sexier, prime time version of the hit soap opera, Night Shift lasted one season.

3. Emmy Award

He won an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in 1998 for his portrayal of Jason Morgan on General Hospital. In total, he’s been nominated for nine Emmy Awards – six for his portrayal of Jason Morgan on General Hospital and three for his portrayal of Dylan McAvoy on The Young and the Restless.

2. Famous Friend

Burton’s good friend and neighbor is former General Hospital and current Nashville actor and musician Jonathan Jackson. They collaborated on a song called “You Killed Romeo” and they even opened a restaurant called Jack and Jameson’s Smokehouse in Franklin, Tennessee.

1. Leaving General Hospital (Part Two)

Steve Burton marked his triumphant return to GH in 2017 but his run would be cut short in late 2021. When ABC’s parent company, Disney, instated a health mandate to tackle the growing global health crisis, Burton declined to comply. Despite being fired, Burton wished GH well and hoped to one day reprise his famous role once again.
